The new expansion for Destiny, House of Wolves, has been out for two weeks now, and I already wrote a post and a video with my first impressions. Since I was out of town I only got to base my initial response on the very short experience I had with the first few missions. After playing a good amount of The Prison of Elders and, surprisingly, even The Trials of Osiris, I have some concerns about the future of the title and the engagement levels with the game.

I recently got into weekly strikes to do but I dislike having to go soloing them because I don’t really like inviting people to my fire team and its kinda harder than it.

Anyone else having issues getting matched up with other players? I’ve been trying to get the strikes done for The Taken King but I always end up getting dumped into the strike by myself. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing any issues with the matchmaking? Gonna be trying to do some strikes tomorrow, if any dudes are up for it. Could be people abandoning or something. I feel like that happens sometimes. Some strikes people just don’t want to do. Is your clock up to date? Mine was out of sync and strike mm was disabled until I used the update option in the ps4’s settings.

The new upgrade system means any Legendary or Exotic weapon and armour piece can be made level 34 – without it losing progression.

Without matchmaking, Raids require groups of players to manually form My Destiny clanmates and I had an expectation House of Wolves.

Not bad for a game that was often maligned for not having enough content. That obsession disappeared with The Dark Below. The expansion compounded the original game’s problems by making the base game’s hard-won gear obsolete. This knowledge was enough for me to excuse myself from those months of daily play and wait for the promised second half of the game’s first season of extra content.

That second update, House of Wolves , is here, and it carries the unenviable baggage of needing to expand on the game proper while also fixing the problems its predecessor introduced. The first major indicator that Bungie had this in mind is The Reef. Seen only in cutscenes during Destiny ‘s base game, The Reef is now a new social hub akin to the previously accessible Tower. It also has most of the amenities of The Tower—bank terminals, a bounty officer, and a new Cryptarch—plus a few new NPCs used in the fresh content and story missions.

You may recognize the areas these missions take you to, but House of Wolves reframes most of them in some interesting ways. Oracles with some added story context. There’s also one new strike, The Shadow Thief.

Black Shield is a medium-sized map set on Phobos. Across the board, House of Wolves aims to make Crucible a more rewarding endeavour.

I never understood the no matchmaking for Nightfalls. Aren’t they just normal missions with modifiers? At least with the Raid there’s the whole.

Across the board, Bungie is laser focused on making Crucible matches more rewarding. Not bad! The pitch: you gather your best gear and two friends to take on a punishing 3v3 Elimination challenge.

Arena is a game mode introduced in the House of Wolves expansion with the Prison of Elders. Arena is a special cooperative game mode that pits players against a series of trials. The Prison of Elders is an Arena located in The Reef and features a randomized base mode with matchmaking available, as well as several higher-level challenge modes that rotate each week, offering more rewards.

It applies a different Modifier each round, and a different set of Modifiers per week, and may contain critical objectives that the three-player team must complete, or else the team wipes.

Since its launch in September, Destiny has always encouraged social engagement as the key to full enjoyment of the game. Raids and Nightfall strikes acted as end-game experiences squarely targeted at group play, but demanded you do your own work to form and solidify the teams that would enter those spaces. With House of Wolves, Bungie has doubled down on this strategy, offering two brand new gameplay modes that are a ton of fun, along with some of the most interesting gear and weapons yet seen, but the best of the new content demands a pre-formed group.

House of Wolves opens with several new story missions, taking Guardians into some pitched battles that nonetheless unfold in mostly familiar locales. The story mission battles are smartly paced, with some fevered combat encounters against large numbers of Fallen foes, and these encounters are friendly to both lone wolf Guardians and fully formed Fireteams.

After the much decried story of the original game, the story content that unfolds in these House of Wolves missions continues to make strides in the right direction. Even so, House of Wolves still leaves the Destiny player base hanging, with the bulk of the most interesting fiction locked away in out-of-game grimoire cards and rarely fleshed out through the missions themselves.

The new strike is a worthy addition to the growing catalog of 3-man, match-made experiences. Shadow Thief takes us up onto a Fallen ship for a running fight against a powerful Fallen mercenary. The mid-level tank battle is fun, and I like the opportunity to explore another Fallen spaceship. Especially if you play on PS4, the nine distinct missions now available make the strike playlist experience varied, easy to enjoy with or without friends, and available for a broad swath of levels.

I had fun facing off against my fellow players in all four of the new Crucible maps.
